Pyrite
Victoria Mine, Navajun, Logrono
La Rioja, Spain

A classic from the Victoria Mine, Navajun, Logrono, La Rioja, Spain.  Although pyrites are relatively abundant in nature where they can be found in either massive or crystal form, it is NOT common to find crystals full finished with the perfection and shine as those from Navajun. Pyrite "Sun"

This flat, round form of Pyrite is named for its resemblance to the sun. They are found between the narrow seams of shale in the coal mines near Sparta, Randolph Co., Illinois.  There are several theories about the 320 million year old origin of these formations.
One is that they are pyritized replacements of an eariler fossil creature. Another is that they are the flattened result of a pyrite crystal growth spread out under the heat and pressure of the rock above (overburden) between the seams of shale. In either case, the Pyrite 'Suns' form an interesting geological specimen and are wonderful eye catchers in a display.
Pyrite Suns have the typical natural bright brassy look.

This is the last and final shipment of Pyrite Suns on matrix. The coal miner that I was buying these specimens from has retired and there will be no more for the foreseeable future.
I now have a new source for Pyrite Suns. The new specimens will not be on matrix. Specimens will be posted soon.
