White Elephant Mine, Mojave Desert, CA.

I have placed a claim on this unique deposit and I am the sole supplier of specimens from the White Elephant Mine. This is a polymetallic deposit and was worked in the past (1930's-1950)primarily for Silver although Lead (Galena), Zinc and other metals are also present. I am in the 3rd season of working this mine and specimens so far have been from the first level. First level specimens are typically Aragonite, Chondrodite, Hyalite, Caliche, Scheelite, Powellite and minor Calcite.
Specimens from this season (2011) are noted as from the second level. The suite and quality of (fluorescent) minerals coming to grass from the second level is outstanding. We have counted more than 9 different fluorescents in any given specimen. The blending of hues between colors adds even more interest. Crystals of Galena and thin seams of Silver are present in many specimens. Hard rock mining will continue for fluorescent and mineral specimens.

Mineral                    Fluorescent response
ARAGONITE          White (and phosphorescent)
CALCITE                Red- (with red flash)
CHONDRODITE   (massive)Yellow
DIOPSIDE              (hard) Bright Blue/White
HYALITE                Green (and phosphorescent)
HYDROZINCITE   (soft) Bluish to Gray-White
POWELLITE          Bright Yellow
SCHEELITE          Bright White
SMITHSONITE      Pink and Lavender
A yellow phosphorescent response has yet to be identified and has only been found in a handful of specimens. Not all mineral species listed is present in every specimen. However, labels will list all fluorescent minerals.
I used an 36watt WAY-TOO-COOL lamp to illuminate the top of these specimens and a WAY-TOO-COOL 9 watt to illuminate the front.
