LONGWAVE FLUORESCENT MINERALS
Collecting Longwave specimens is an excellent way to begin or expand your
fluorescent collection. Great specimens are available for novice to advanced collectors. Longwave UV lights are inexpensive
and easy to acquire. See our UV lamp page for more information.

The specimens listed below are from a recent excavation by
Mineralman in the
CALICO MOUNTAINS, MOJAVE DESERT, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY,
CA.
Mineral fluorescence is much more vivid in person than can be captured with a camera.
The minerals in these specimens from the Calico Mountains
exhibit the following fluorescent color response:
- Colemanite- Blue/White and highly Phosphorescent
- Calcite- Yellow/ Cream
- Howlite- Purple/Blue
|
COLEMANITE ,CALCITE and HOWLITE
Beautiful clusters of Colemanite (bluish/white), Calcite (yellow/cream) and Howlite (purple/blue) crystals.
Excellent free standing cluster of crystals on top and a pocket of crystals on the side. Lots of smaller crystals disseminated
in the matrix. Very fluorescent under short and long wave. Enduring phosphorescence when exposed to short wave UV but
will also phosphoresce when exposed to long wave UV. This unique specimen location is referenced in "FLUORESCENCE
Gems and Minerals under Ultraviolet Light" by Robbins.
Large cabinet size specimen is 5" x 4" x 3"

FLUORITE and GALENA
Awesome longwave UV (and shortwave UV) fluorescent blue Fluorite
from a now closed mine. Beautiful grass green Fluorite crystals and Galena crystals cover the matrix. Many
Fluorite specimens from this mine respond well to natural sunlight turning a deep blue when exposed to the sun and reverting
back to green. Many crystals on this specimen are sunlight reactive turning a deep blue upon sun exposure.
Large cabinet size specimen was discovered in 2006 and has
resided in my personal collection since 2007. From the Dodgy Bugger Pocket, Rogerley Mine, Frosterley,
County Durham, England.
Specimen size is 4.50"x 4.15"x 2.75" and weighs 1 pound
3.4 ounces

Fluorite on Celestite
These outstanding specimens of FLUORITE belong to a VERY SMALL sub-group of fluorescent minerals.
The fluorescence is due to hydrocarbon impurities incorporated within the crystal lattice of the FLUORITE during formation
of the crystals and not to other elements as is the case with the vast majority of fluorescent minerals. A large pocket
was discovered in November 2006 and specimens were acquired by me in January 2007. See
the Dec. 2007 MINERALOGICAL RECORD vol.38, number 6 pages 478 & 479 for a discussion regarding this unique find.
These are the finest Fluorite specimens to come from this location in over 50 years of mining!! These fine FLUORITES were photographed under longwave UV but are equally fluorescent under
short wave UV. The phosphorescence is remarkable under shortwave UV, lasting several minutes (with a dark adapted
eye) and noteworthy under longwave UV. Superb example of this very RARE fluorescent
FLUORITE on CELESTITE are now available. Add one to your collection now while available. We may
have to wait another 50 years for another unique find such as this! A
rare and unusual find from the White Rock Quarry, Clay Center, Ottawa County, Ohio.

Hackmanite
Vibrant Orange fluorescent under Longwave UV and bright
white under Shortwave UV. And talk about PHOSPHORESCENT!!! WOW!!
I exposed these specimens to ONE MINUTE of shortwave and many specimens were still
glowing after thirty minutes!! These specimens are also VERY tenebrescent. Turning a deep purple when exposed to the sun or shortwave UV then fading back to a soft lilac color. Some of these
pegmatite specimens also have unknown SW/UV fluorescents of red, yellow and violet.Specimens are from
Sar-e-Sang, Kokcha Valley, Badakhstan, Afghanistan.
