Special Acquisition

Amethyst from Las Vigas, Veracruz, Mexico.

Highlighted in the Mineralogical Record, vol. 34, number 6, November/ December 2003 Mexico (Special Issue 3) "Famous Mineral Localities".

These spectacular Amethysts are mined by hand under the most primitive and dangerous conditions. The specimens are then transported by pack mules from the mountains near Las Vigas to the city of Vera Cruz where they were acquired. Rarely will you have an opportunity to own gem quality Amethyst crystals of such perfection. The mere fact that we are able to see, appreciate, and own one of these gemmy wonders is a feat unto itself. Every serious collector should have one of these beauties grace their collection.

"Cactus" Quartz var. Amethyst
Mpumalanga, South Africa
These specimens came from a very limited find of Amethyst crystals. What makes them unique is the second generation of Amethyst crystals that have grown over the main first generation Amethyst crystals leaving just the tips exposed. Quartz crystals are still coming from this location, but they lack the Amethyst coloration and internal zoning. Secure one for your collection before they are gone.

Carrolite

carr1001.jpg

carr1001a.jpg

Quality specimens of Carrolite are nearly impossible to acquire. The mine that they come from is a hard rock mine where blasting is a regular practice. Since Carrolite is not what the miners are after, crystals are usually damaged during the mining process.
This specimen is a rare exception to the rule. This cubic sulfide of the Linnaeite Group sports an undamaged crystal with a mirror bright surface. Some overgrowth of Bornite and Chalcopyrite on the specimen adds interesting rainbow colors.
